Over the past two years, we witnessed Jesus being twisted, distorted and co-opted by Christians and politicians alike to serve an agenda of their own. Enticed by power and greed, many profess the name of Jesus, while looking nothing like Jesus.
While this is not a new phenomenon, many of us saw this reality play out in ways we’ve never seen before as this pandemic exposed the ugliness of white western evangelicalism’s complicity with white supremacy, racism, patriarchy, misogyny, sexism, capitalism and nationalism. Perhaps the most clear and graphic portrayal of this was seen on national television as Christians stormed the capitol building on January 6th, 2021 holding signs that said: “Jesus Saves.”
As such, not only are people continuing to leave the church in droves, but many of us personally have found ourselves in a season of deconstructing our own faith and calling into question our relationship with the church.
Yet, while many of us are admittedly skeptical and tired of institutional church, frustrated at the ways in which the church has done much harm to others in the name of Jesus, and still coming to terms with our own complicity in such matters; we are also desperately longing to discover a more loving, compassionate, just and authentic faith in Jesus, but just don’t know where and how to start.
We invite you to join us over the next 10 weeks starting on Sunday, February 6th as we journey together through the Gospel of St. Mark in hopes of not only reclaiming for ourselves the Jesus of the holy scriptures, but perhaps more importantly, reclaiming for ourselves the radically countercultural and subversive way of Jesus.
